Haiku for piano joined by new recorder works
Haiku 1: Birds performed by Nathan Williamson (piano)
The Red House, Golf Lane, Aldeburgh, Suffolk, IP15 5PZ
During his extraordinary career John Turner has commissioned and inspired hundreds of new works as well as unearthing, editing and publishing many more gems otherwise lost to posterity. These include a Sonata by Handel and - heard in this recital for the first time - several shorter pieces by Lennox Berkeley and edited by Michael Berkeley. A range of other 20th century and contemporary music, including Michael's Haiku for solo piano, performed by Nathan Williamson, and works written specially for John by Suffolk-based composers Peter Dickinson and Elis Pekhonen, compliment these unearthed treasures. All ticket holders are welcome to meet and chat to the performers in the homely setting of Benjamin Britten’s Red House before the concert. (Synopsis by Alwyn Music Festival)

Typewriter Music at Extended Play in Sydney
Typewriter Music performed by Jenny Duck-Chong (mezzo-soprano) & Geoffrey Gartner (cello)
City Recital Hall, 2 Angel Place, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia
Box office: City Recital Hall
A chameleonic ensemble of movable size and instrumentation, Halcyon draws together virtuosic artists for each performance. This is Halcyon at its most intimate - one voice and one instrument in conversation as equals. Halcyon’s director, mezzo-soprano Jenny Duck-Chong, is joined by two outstanding independent artists, cellist Geoffrey Gartner and guitarist Vladimir Gorbach to present works for solo voice and instrument. Traversing a kaleidoscope of colours drawn from the most minimal of means, the interplay of voice and strings has never been more engaging.
Part of the 12-hour Extended Play festival, this recital is a celebration as much of the Australian home grown as that from abroad. The diverse program features bite-sized and more substantial works from established composers in Australia and the UK spanning three decades: the radiant blend of cello and voice in 'Typewriter Music' by Michael Berkeley, works by Julian Yu and Moya Henderson alongside Ross Edward’s iconic Maninya I; and the joyful and at times explosive exploration of voice and guitar in two energetic works, Matthew Hindson’s Insect Songs and Kerry Andrew’s fruit songs.
