  The Romance of the Rose in Afternoon Concert

  The Romance of the Rose performed by the Ulster Orchestra & Jac van Steen (conductor)

  Along with Michael Berkeley's 'The Romance of the Rose', Richard Rodney Bennett and Ravel are on this bill of fayre on BBC Radio 3. Tom Borrow is the soloist in Ravel's dazzling concerto performed with the Ulster Orchestra. There's also the final act of Emilio de Cavalieri's early opera 'Portrayal of the Soul and the Body'.
  
  'Romance of the Rose' is a Theme and Variations compiled from incidental music from a Radio 3 series based on the early French poem, Romance of the Rose. It was written with amateur orchestras in mind for its performance.

  The Tetbury Music Festival's Gala Concert featured the World Premiere of 'Two as One’ with Carolyn Sampson (soprano) and Tim Mead (countertenor). It is a new companion piece to Michael Berkeley's Touch Light, which was also performed. Touch Light was originally commissioned for the 2005 festival to celebrate the marriage of Katie Smith and Jonnie Wake, and was first performed by the Kings Consort, Lorna Anderson and Robin Blaze, directed by Robert King. The new work was commissioned to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Martin and Elise Smith.
  
  More love songs, duets and operatic interludes by GF Handel, and Purcell's Trio Sonata complete the programme. The concert was given by by members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, led by Margaret Faultless (violin) and directed by Jonathan Cohen.

  Jörgen van Rijen conducted a varied programme of music for brass from the last four centuries. The concert included the world premiere of 'Out of the Depths' by Michael Berkeley for Bass trombone played by Michaias Berlouis. A huge, mythical creature is disturbed and stirs. The concert was live-streamed on the Academy's YouTube channel.

  The Berkeley Ensemble mark their return following the Covid-19 pandemic with a double bill of performances in Little Venice, West London. Join the ensemble at St Marks Church to discover repertoire that the ensemble have got to know behind closed doors during the past 18 months. The programme includes 'A Dark Waltz' by Michael Berkeley, and works by Lennox Berkeley, Holst, Howell, John Ireland and others.

  Michael Berkeley's Snake is performed in this online concert alongside works by Britten, Vaughan-Williams, Melcher and Verdi. 'Of animals, humans and gods' explores the relationship between music and literature.
